This offseason was unlike any other in recent years for La Jolla Country Day football, coming off a coaching change as longtime assistant Carmy Cesaire Jr. took over for Tyler Hales in May. However, the Torreys made sure they delivered for their new head coach with a 50-13 victory at Canyon Hills Friday evening. “It feels great,” Torreys quarterback Will Bertrand said. “New head coach going into this. We knew we were well prepared. We were ready to go out there. We’ve been waiting a long time through fall camp and all spring ball. Coach Carmy. It’s his first year, but it’s a great brotherhood, a great family we have out here, and it’s great to go get a nice first win.” La Jolla Country Day (1-0) broke a 7-7 tie in the second quarter with a 4-yard touchdown run from Keenan Ward and a 62-yard pick-6 from Mikey Pena just before halftime. It was ultimately one of two interceptions returned back to the house for the Torreys as Marvin Jones III ran one back in the third quarter, also from 62 yards out. Finding the end zone in multiple phases of the game will be a huge factor in Cesaire Jr.’s first season. “We talk about taking the ball away,” Cesaire Jr. said as he took a Gatorade bath as time expired for his first win. “That’s how you’re able to score 40 and 50 points. We need defensive plays and takeaways to do that.” Scoring touchdowns for long distances ultimately came on both sides of the ball. Bertrand completed 11 of 16 passes for 229 yards and three touchdowns. He found Rocco Taccone for a 63-yard catch and run for the game’s first score. Then he found Owen Dorros for a 76-yard score to take a 29-7 lead on the opening drive of the second half. The long scores continued as Ward scored a second touchdown from 47 yards in the third quarter to highlight a 12-carry, 109-yard performance with a two-point conversion run. “It’s nothing new to him,” Bertrand said of Ward. “He’s been doing that since the first week last year. He had all our points, so I’m really happy to see it. He’s been working hard, and it’s definitely nice to be able to win both passing and running.” Canyon Hills (0-1) was led by quarterback Josiah Singh, who completed 10 of 17 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions. That touchdown went for 73 yards to Taylor Sheriff on a seam route. Sherriff led the team with 92 receiving yards on four receptions while Makhi Fields-Cook was limited to 14 rushing yards on five carries before exiting due to injury. Next week, both Canyon Hills and La Jolla Country Day are home, playing Vincent Memorial and Mt. Carmel, respectively. Kickoff for both matchups are slated for 7 p.m.
