LA JOLLA COUNTRY DAY RALLIES, WINS COASTAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP IN BASEBALL
SOLANA BEACH — In an inning in which Santa Fe Christian scored four runs, sent 10 batters to the plate, had three infield hits and saw the La Jolla Country Day defense commit a pair of errors, sophomore left-hander Elias Hanley could have come unglued.
“That’s not him,” said LJCD coach Jon Edman. “Elias is the most resilient kid I know. Things just don’t bother him. He just kept pitching, kept fighting.”
Those were the only four runs Santa Fe Christian would score on Tuesday.
LJCD got a clutch two-out, two-RBI pinch-hit single from Alex Rosik in the fifth inning to tie the game and a go-ahead RBI from Riley Davis-Reagan in the sixth en route to a 5-4 win that clinches the Coastal League championship for the Torreys (17-9, 8-2).
Hanley threw 41 pitches in the third inning.
“It seemed like it was lucky hit after lucky hit,” said Hanley, who improved to 7-2 on the season. “I had to battle back, go after the hitters. I tip my cap to them because they did what they had to do. I just had to keep going and try to get an out.”
In the fourth inning, Hanley got a great play from second baseman Nick Hedgecock to get out of a jam, a play on which Hedgecock was hurt and had to leave the game.
In the fifth, Adyn Panganiban, who replaced Hedgecock, made a fine defensive play.
Edman used a string of pinch-hitters in the fifth inning.
Rosik was called on to hit for Keenan Ward and inherited a one-strike count.
“I’ve been pinch-hitting a lot,” said Rosik, who hit the first pitch he saw. “With a one-strike count, I figured I’d get a fastball. I was anxious. I got my pitch, and got a base hit.”
Davis-Reagan singled in a run in the third and drove in what proved to be the winning run in the sixth with a double down the left-field line.
“We came into the game hot, with a six-game winning streak,” Davis-Reagan said. “We’ve been working hard, and hard work seems to pay off. We’re hitting our stride at exactly the right time.”
LJCD and Santa Fe Christian play again on Thursday, and have a 7 p.m. game at LJCD on Friday to end the regular season.
The Torreys are a Division 1 team that figures to get a top-four seed in the playoffs.
Santa Fe Christian (14-11, 5-5) is a Division 2 team and should also get a top-four seed in the playoffs.
“We’ve clinched the league title, but seeding is at stake,” Edman said. “So we’ll play these next two games just like we would any other. And I imagine SFC will do the same.”
