La Jolla Country Day beats Bishop’s for Coastal Classic volleyball title

LA JOLLA COUNTRY DAY BEATS BISHOP’S FOR COASTAL CLASSIC VOLLEYBALL TITLE

LA JOLLA — Teams converged from Orange and Los Angeles counties and all four points of San Diego County for this weekend’s La Jolla Coastal Classic. What Saturday proved was that La Jolla is the second-best area in the section for girls volleyball this season outside of Del Mar Heights Road. In an all-La Jolla championship, La Jolla Country Day beat Bishop’s 25-23, 25-12 in a tournament that featured six of the top 14 teams in the county. “It adds an extra layer of competition because we’re always playing to be best in the city,” Torreys junior setter Alice Burgett said. “It adds another level of competitiveness to the games.” Burgett had three kills, three stuff blocks and an ace in the championship match for LJCD (16-2). She was joined on the all-tournament team by Torreys libero Gia Gupta. “Alice is amazing,” Torreys coach Tina Kinkead said. “She can set anywhere at any time. She finds the hitters that are going to win games for us. She wins games for us by blocking. She’s an incredible leader.” Bishop’s (14-5) was represented on the all-tournament team by outside hitters Kate Bennett and Myah Koster. Sophomore setter Avery Peckham runs the Knights fast-paced offense that makes the Knights a dangerous team. Bishop’s may be just a couple weeks away from getting another powerful pin hitter back. Junior Kasia Zwierzykowski is close to recovering from a torn ACL suffered last November. “We’re still learning how to play together,” Knights coach Katie Meyers said. “If you looked at us a week or two ago compared to now, we’re playing significantly different and better. Learning how to do it consistently and learning how we want to play together. We didn’t play our best match in the finals, but that’s kind of just how it goes.” Host La Jolla also represented the city with a solid semifinal finish. The Vikings came into the weekend with a 4-6 record then had a pair of three-set thrillers in the playoffs. They won their pool despite being seeded fourth in a four-team pool. They beat El Toro 23-21 in a third-set quarterfinal match that was supposed to go to 15. They then faced the Torreys in the semifinals and came up just short, 25-22, 17-25, 15-13. La Jolla placed setter Sofia Costello on the all-tournament team. Scrappy Eastlake also finished a solid tourney tied for third following a 25-15, 25-21 loss to Bishop’s in the gold semifinals. Noelle Barcas earned all-tournament honors. Christian (13-4) lost to the Torreys in the first playoff match then came back to beat Sage Hill for fifth place. Carlsbad (14-4) beat Patrick Henry (10-10), 25-20, 19-25, 15-13 for the silver division championship. Ruby Partain earned all-tournament honors for the Lancers, while Alyssa Chu did the same for the Patriots. The Torreys were missing starter Charlotte Jansen, who was at a Stanford beach camp. Libero/defensive specialist Calin Schneider stepped in and put shot after shot away to help the Torreys. “I think a mark of our team is grit, never giving up,” Kinkead said. “Regardless of the score, it’s a never-give-up mindset.” While the majority of setter dumps in the girls’ game are of the two-handed set over the net sideways variety, Burgett utilizes the old school left-handed dump. She had one such play for a 23-10 lead in set two of the title match and then followed that up with a kong block for match point. “I enjoy playing front row and doing more than just defense, too,” Burgett said. “It’s always nice to earn a point as a setter putting it away.”
